Vehicle Stolen? Here Is Exactly What To Do — Step by Step Guide

06 Jul 2026 · Satyasakshi LLP

Having your vehicle stolen is a shock for any family — but if you take the right steps in the first 24-48 hours, your chances of recovering the vehicle and getting the insurance claim approved both improve dramatically. Working in vehicle recovery, we have seen hundreds of cases, and most losses happen because of wrong information or delay. Here is the complete step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Inform the Police Immediately (first 1-2 hours)

Call 112 or visit the nearest police station. Many states also offer e-FIR for vehicle theft — you can register the FIR online from home. Make sure these details are recorded correctly in the FIR:

Important: Always collect a certified copy of the FIR. Without an FIR the police will not officially search, and the insurance claim will not move.

Step 2: Intimate Your Insurance Company the Same Day

After the police, your second call should be to your insurer — the toll-free number is on the policy document. Note down the claim/reference number. Policies require prompt intimation, so do not postpone it — delay is the most common hurdle in theft claims.

Step 3: Inform the RTO and Your Bank

Step 4: Preserve Evidence and Documents

Keep ready: both original keys (insurers ask for both — if one was lost earlier, disclose it upfront), original RC, policy copy, FIR copy, driving licence. Get nearby CCTV footage secured quickly — most systems delete recordings within 7-15 days. FASTag movement history can also reveal the route taken after the theft.

Step 5: The Untraced Report — The Most Important Claim Document

If the police cannot find the vehicle, they file a final report/untraced report in court after investigation. Insurers need this very report for full settlement of a theft claim. It usually takes a few months — stay in regular touch with the insurer during this period.

Never Make These 5 Mistakes

  1. Delaying the FIR or getting details recorded incorrectly
  2. Postponing insurance intimation for weeks while "searching for the vehicle yourself"
  3. Posting details like the chassis number on social media (fraudsters can misuse them)
  4. Revealing at the end of the claim that you only have one key
  5. Staying silent after a claim rejection — most rejections can be challenged (consumer forum, ombudsman)

How To Improve the Chances of Recovery?

The police handle thousands of cases. A professional vehicle recovery team traces the vehicle through FASTag trails, toll data, scrap markets, border checkpoints and informer networks — this is our daily work. The sooner the recovery process starts, the better the chances of finding the vehicle before it crosses into another state or is dismantled.
